Week 4

03/03/06 - After a couple weeks searching for a non-existent size of chromoly tubing, I settled in and designed a round bar chassis for the car.  This is the base structure we are going to build off of.  Ultimately there will be diamond shaped reinforcement added into the center to dramatically increase side-impact rigidity v. the standard X-pattern stuff everyone is currently using.  Nice to have MSC Patran finite element modeling at my disposal - about the only perk being an engineer :o)  See below...

Other than that, AJ and I had a great dialogue regarding the rear suspension and his ideas started flying.  What did we settle on?  I was going to go to 935-style tube trailing arms, but now we are going to 86 the trailing arms altogether, cut out the hub, build uprights from there and 5-link 'em.

Oh yeah baby, I am getting excited now!  Want some rear caster - turn a couple bars.  Camber - turn a couple bars.  Toe - turn link 5.  Longer wheelbase...narrower/wider track width...lotion, I need lotion here...
